                        <abstract language="eng"><p>Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) have emerged as promising tools for improving agricultural productivity and promoting sustainable farming practices. Due to their unique physicochemical properties, such as high surface area, controlled release capability, and enhanced reactivity, nanomaterials are increasingly being used to improve nutrient delivery, enhance plant growth, and protect crops from pests and diseases. Nano-enabled agricultural products, including nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, and nanosensors, contribute to higher crop yields while reducing excessive chemical inputs and environmental pollution. Furthermore, engineered nanomaterials support precision agriculture by enabling efficient resource management and real-time monitoring of plant health. Despite these advantages, concerns regarding nanoparticle toxicity, environmental accumulation, and regulatory challenges remain important considerations for their widespread adoption. This review highlights the role of engineered nanomaterials in plant growth enhancement and sustainable agricultural production, discusses recent advancements, major applications, challenges, and future research directions for developing environmentally safe and efficient nano-enabled agricultural technologies.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>1. Introduction</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The increasing global population, climate change, declining soil fertility, and limited natural resources have created significant challenges for modern agriculture <strong>[1,2]</strong>. Meeting the growing demand for food while minimizing environmental degradation requires innovative technologies that improve crop productivity and resource-use efficiency. Conventional agricultural practices often rely on excessive applications of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which can reduce soil quality, contaminate water resources, and negatively affect ecosystems <strong>[3]</strong>. Therefore, sustainable agricultural approaches have become essential for ensuring long-term food security and environmental protection.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nanotechnology has emerged as one of the most promising innovations in agriculture, offering advanced solutions for improving plant growth and agricultural sustainability <strong>[4,5]</strong>. Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) possess unique physical and chemical characteristics, including high surface area, small particle size, enhanced reactivity, and controlled-release properties. These features enable more efficient delivery of nutrients and agrochemicals, resulting in improved nutrient uptake, enhanced crop productivity, and reduced environmental losses compared with conventional agricultural inputs <strong>[2,6]</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Engineered nanomaterials are increasingly applied in the development of nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, nanosensors, and nano-based soil amendments <strong>[1,4,7]</strong>. These technologies support precision agriculture by enabling targeted nutrient delivery, early disease detection, efficient pest management, and continuous monitoring of plant and soil health. As a result, farmers can optimize agricultural inputs, reduce production costs, and minimize environmental impacts while maintaining high crop yields <strong>[8]</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Recent advances in nanotechnology, biotechnology, and precision farming have further expanded the applications of engineered nanomaterials in sustainable agriculture <strong>[5,9]</strong>. However, concerns regarding nanoparticle toxicity, environmental persistence, food safety, and regulatory frameworks require careful evaluation before their large-scale adoption <strong>[7,10,11]</strong>. Understanding both the benefits and potential risks of engineered nanomaterials is essential for their safe and responsible use in agricultural systems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This review provides an overview of engineered nanomaterials and their role in enhancing plant growth and sustainable agricultural production. It discusses the major types of nanomaterials used in agriculture, their mechanisms of action, applications in crop improvement, current challenges, and future research opportunities for developing safe and sustainable nano-enabled farming systems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>2. Engineered Nanomaterials in Agriculture</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) are materials with at least one dimension ranging from 1 to 100 nanometers <strong>[5,7]</strong>. Their unique properties, including high surface area, enhanced chemical reactivity, and controlled-release capability, make them highly effective for agricultural applications. Commonly used nanomaterials include metal nanoparticles, metal oxide nanoparticles, carbon-based nanomaterials, silica nanoparticles, and polymeric nanomaterials <strong>[4,12]</strong>. These materials improve nutrient availability, enhance plant metabolism, and increase resistance to environmental stress. Compared with conventional agricultural products, nanomaterials provide more efficient delivery of nutrients and agrochemicals while minimizing losses to the environment <strong>[2,6]</strong>. Their growing use in agriculture has created new opportunities for improving crop productivity and supporting sustainable farming practices <strong>[8]</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>3. Nanomaterials for Plant Growth Enhancement</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Engineered nanomaterials promote plant growth by improving seed germination, root development, photosynthesis, nutrient absorption, and overall plant metabolism <strong>[4,5]</strong>. Nanofertilizers gradually release essential nutrients, allowing plants to absorb them more efficiently while reducing nutrient loss through leaching and volatilization <strong>[2,6]</strong>. Some nanoparticles also stimulate antioxidant enzyme activity, helping plants tolerate drought, salinity, and other environmental stresses <strong>[8,10]</strong>. In addition, nanomaterials enhance microbial activity in the rhizosphere, improving soil fertility and plant health <strong>[9,13]</strong>. These benefits contribute to increased crop yield and better agricultural productivity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>4. Applications in Sustainable Agricultural Production</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nanotechnology plays an important role in sustainable agriculture by reducing excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides while improving crop quality and productivity <strong>[1,3]</strong>. Nanofertilizers provide controlled nutrient release, whereas nanopesticides improve pest control through targeted delivery and reduced chemical application <strong>[2,12]</strong>. Nanosensors enable real-time monitoring of soil moisture, nutrient levels, and plant health, allowing farmers to make informed management decisions <strong>[8,9]</strong>. These technologies support precision agriculture by increasing resource-use efficiency and minimizing environmental pollution <strong>[5,6]</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>5. Environmental and Agricultural Benefits</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The application of engineered nanomaterials offers several environmental benefits by reducing chemical runoff, improving nutrient use efficiency, and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions associated with agricultural production <strong>[2,6]</strong>. Controlled-release nanomaterials decrease fertilizer losses and reduce contamination of soil and water resources <strong>[1,12]</strong>. Improved nutrient uptake also lowers production costs while increasing crop yield <strong>[4,14]</strong>. These advantages contribute to sustainable farming systems that balance agricultural productivity with environmental conservation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>6. Challenges and Safety Concerns</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite their significant advantages, engineered nanomaterials present several challenges that require careful investigation <strong>[7,10]</strong>. Excessive accumulation of nanoparticles in soil and water may affect beneficial microorganisms, plants, animals, and human health <strong>[11]</strong>. Long-term environmental impacts and food safety concerns remain areas of active research <strong>[3,7]</strong>. In addition, the lack of standardized regulations and risk assessment protocols limits the large-scale commercialization of nano-enabled agricultural products <strong>[10]</strong>. Therefore, comprehensive toxicity studies and appropriate regulatory frameworks are essential to ensure the safe use of nanotechnology in agriculture.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>7. Future Perspectives</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Future research should focus on developing biodegradable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective nanomaterials for agricultural applications <strong>[6,15]</strong>. Advances in nanobiotechnology, artificial intelligence, precision farming, and smart sensing technologies are expected to improve the efficiency of nano-enabled agriculture <strong>[8,9]</strong>. Integrating engineered nanomaterials with digital agriculture and climate-smart farming practices will support sustainable crop production while minimizing environmental risks <strong>[5]</strong>. Collaborative research among scientists, policymakers, and industry will be essential for promoting the responsible use of nanotechnology in agriculture <strong>[10]</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>8. Conclusion</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Engineered nanomaterials have emerged as innovative tools for improving plant growth and promoting sustainable agricultural production. Their unique properties enhance nutrient delivery, crop protection, and resource-use efficiency while reducing environmental pollution associated with conventional agricultural practices. Applications such as nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, and nanosensors have demonstrated significant potential for increasing agricultural productivity and supporting precision farming. Although challenges related to nanoparticle toxicity, environmental safety, and regulatory policies remaing, ongoing research continues to improve the development of safe and sustainable nanomaterials. Future advancements in nanotechnology and smart agriculture are expected to contribute significantly to global food security, environmental conservation, and sustainable agricultural development.</p>
